Fluctuations of Search Engine Rankings

It’s normal if fluctuations in your rankings make you nervous. Watching as your website drops in Google can seem alarming because even one small shift can create a noticeable difference in traffic to your website.

But keep in mind that these fluctuations in your search engine rankings are normal and they happen to everyone!

Fluctuations Are Normal

Fluctuations are so common that it would be rare to see the top 3-5 rankings of a keyword search to stay the same over the course of months.

If you’re monitoring your rankings every day, you might see rankings fluctuate something like this: #4, #2, #5, etc. However, if you were monitoring your rankings monthly, you may not notice a change at all.

In the end, the best way to monitor rankings is over a long period of time. This will provide the most realistic view of a website’s SEO performance. If there has been a consistent drop in rankings over a few months, then you may want to consider making some adjustments.

There can be a number of reasons for results to be skewed. One simply being proximity. For example, results shown on your home computer can be different than the ones on your work computer. This is due in part to past search behaviors and location, among other things.

If you see occasional fluctuations in your rankings, try not to panic. This is a typical evolution of Google’s shifting algorithm.
